Guam National Golf Federation Elects new officers, announces plans for new Tournament
The Federation held its annual meeting on January 10, at the Marriott Hotel. New Officers elected were:
President: Pat Burke
Vice President: George Benoit
Treasurer: Vickie Hammer
Secretary: Tom Tarpley
The new president announced plans to hold the First Annual Guam Amateur Golf Championship at the Guam International Country Club, Feb 28, March1 –2 (54 hole event).
This event will be used as a major fund –raiser to send Guam’s Golf team to Fiji in June. All teams are being assessed very heavy costs because of the travel distance, so Guam’s team of 8 players (4 men, 4 women) plus coaches, are in desperate need of financial help.
“This Championship is one that we have been planning for some years” said Burke “Every State has its own National Championship for men, ladies, Seniors, and Juniors, so why not Guam?”
“The Championship will have flights for Men, A, B, & C, as well as seniors and super seniors (Over 60). Ladies flight will cover loss gross (Championship) and low nets. The Juniors (under 18) will hold their Championships later in the Year, probably August” Burke said, noting that outstanding juniors will be allowed to play in the Championship flights.
In addition to this championship, Burke also announced that memberships will also be offered to individuals through a Preferred Membership Discount Card, with great discounts at many island businesses. “This will encourage individual golfers to join, because they can also get certified handicaps through our system, which is allied with the USGA”
Also in the making, are plans for Guam’s first GOLF HALL OF FAME. Men and women who played significant roles in bringing golf to Guam, will be recognized for their contributions to the island, and to the game.
“All in all” Burke said, “The Federation wants to do more to be recognized as the umbrella organization for all golf clubs and associations, and the official link with the United States Golf Association (USGA)”
